The Congress has suffered another setback ahead of the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections, with several workers and supporters from Wards 40 and 41 leaving the party and joining the BJP, alleging that their preferred candidates were denied party tickets.
They joined the BJP by accepting the party flag from district president Rupam Saha at the BJP office in Silchar. At a press conference held later, the new entrants alleged that despite being associated with the Congress for a long time, their areas had not witnessed the expected development.
They also alleged that in this election, eligible and well-known candidates in Wards 40 and 41 were overlooked and tickets were given to relatively unfamiliar candidates.
The new BJP workers and supporters said their dissatisfaction over the ticket distribution led them to decide to switch parties.
Claiming that the BJP would win both wards in the upcoming election, they said they were hopeful that development in the areas would accelerate under the BJP's leadership.
