Tension gripped the Herapati-Tanpara area of Nagaon after local residents staged a protest against the growing drug menace and vandalised the residence of an alleged drug peddler, accusing the police of failing to act despite repeated complaints.
According to local sources, a large number of residents came out in protest against the alleged sale and consumption of banned narcotic substances in the locality. The protesters targeted the house of an accused identified as Shamsul Haque, alleging his involvement in drug trafficking activities.
Residents claimed that they had repeatedly informed the police about the activities of Shamsul Haque and several other alleged drug addicts and peddlers operating in the area. However, they alleged that no effective action was taken by law enforcement agencies.
Frustrated by the alleged inaction, the protesters reportedly took matters into their own hands and damaged the accused's residence, demanding strict action against those involved in the drug trade.
Eyewitnesses said the protest quickly drew a large crowd, with residents expressing concern over the increasing impact of drug abuse on local youth and the wider community.
The incident has once again highlighted public concern over the spread of narcotics in parts of Nagaon district and growing demands for stronger enforcement measures against drug traffickers.
Police officials have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations made by residents or the vandalism of the house.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
