Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 21 made a series of political remarks covering key aspects of BJP’s internal restructuring, regional political dynamics in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), and broader governance concerns.
Referring to recent changes within the party, the Chief Minister confirmed that a new committee has been constituted within the BJP, adding that district presidents will not be permitted to contest upcoming elections, though all other members are free to do so. The move is seen as part of an effort to ensure internal checks and strengthen grassroots-level leadership.
Addressing questions surrounding government assistance received by a minister's spouse, the Chief Minister dismissed criticisms, stating, “What’s wrong if someone receives government aid? Anyone who applies is eligible. Even individual or special requests can be considered. Frankly, it’s better to raise and feed cattle than to kill and consume them.”
"They want to produce milk at home. Where is the issue in that? They have to run their household. The individual is a minister today and may not be tomorrow. but his household has to run", added CM Sarma.
In a candid admission, CM Sarma acknowledged that BJP is not a dominant force in the BTR, saying, “We need the support of both the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) to strengthen our position in the region.”
In response to a recent statement by Gobinda Basumatary, the CM remarked, “He is right — UPPL does not require support from anyone else.”
