A major protest erupted on Monday at the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy (SLSA)—the sole sports institution in Arunachal Pradesh's capital, when members of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) attempted to lock the gates of the academy, accusing it of severe mismanagement and operational failures.
The demonstration, part of a broader peaceful rally organized by AAPSU, drew significant attention as one enraged activist went to the extent of stripping partially in public, symbolizing outrage over what protesters claimed was rampant corruption and inefficiency within the state’s Sports Department.
Protesters alleged that despite repeated representations, the academy has consistently failed to provide adequate training, infrastructure, and support to aspiring athletes. The AAPSU described the SLSA as a "non-performing institution" and held placards demanding urgent reforms and accountability.
As tension built up, SDPO Kengo Dirchi along with local police personnel arrived at the scene and intervened before the protesters could lock the premises. The police cited procedural issues and urged the student body to address their grievances through legal and administrative avenues rather than symbolic disruptions.
In response to the protest, Director of Sports, Tadar Apa, addressed the agitating crowd and assured that the department would take serious note of their concerns. He committed to conducting a review and implementing necessary corrective actions in the interest of the sporting community.
