Sixteen days after the Harang Bridge collapse in Assam’s Cachar district, the temporary bamboo bridge built as a stopgap solution has also collapsed early this morning around 5 AM, leaving locals stranded once again.
Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev strongly criticised the Assam government, questioning the lack of basic alternatives. “In the much-touted Viksit Bharat, not even a boat has been provided for safe public commuting,” she said.
Dev alleged that State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) boats remain docked and unused, while residents risk their lives crossing the river on ordinary boats.

The Assam government had earlier assured the public that a Bailey bridge would be constructed within 10 to 12 days, but Dev claimed that the promise has not materialised. With monsoon rains continuing to lash the region, Barak Valley remains virtually cut off, facing severe disruptions in both road and rail connectivity.
Local residents have voiced frustration over the slow pace of restoration, urging authorities to expedite the construction of a reliable bridge to prevent further hardship.
