A massive fire broke out on Sunday, November 16 at the Post Office building near Gate No. 8 in Maligaon’s Bharalumukh area, sending panic across the neighbourhood as thick smoke rapidly engulfed the vicinity.
The blaze, which reportedly began on the third floor, was initially suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit. However, fresh accounts from the site indicate that the fire intensified after a cooking gas cylinder explosion inside a residence where a small birthday celebration for the deceased couple’s daughter was underway.
Residents said the flames shot up suddenly, followed by a loud blast, causing dense smoke to blanket the area and prompting chaos among locals.
Several fire tenders from the Fire & Emergency Services were immediately pressed into action. Firefighters carried out a swift rescue operation, managing to pull out two individuals trapped inside the building.
The victims, identified as Debo Choudhury (47) and Pompi Choudhury (36), were rescued in critical condition. Emergency teams provided immediate medical assistance before rushing them to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Despite efforts to revive them, both succumbed to their injuries due to severe burns and excessive smoke inhalation.
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the blaze, while additional details are awaited as investigation continues.
