Twenty former cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were released on bail from the Kokrajhar District Jail on Friday, July 17. The individuals had been incarcerated for over ten years, some even longer, in connection with cases previously under investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The legal proceedings, originally handled by the NIA, were subsequently handed over to the jurisdiction of the Assam state government. Following this transfer, the cases were placed before the Kokrajhar district court, which granted bail to all 20 accused.
The release was met with a warm welcome at the jail premises by prominent former NDFB leader N. Naisrang, accompanied by several other ex-cadres and supporters. Expressing gratitude, the released individuals extended their thanks to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the government’s efforts in facilitating their bail and ensuring their reintegration into society.
The move is being seen as a step forward in the ongoing peace process and rehabilitation of former militants in the Bodoland region.
