Assam: 33rd Durand Cup kicks off in Kokrajhar with grand opening ceremony and cultural festivities

The football season officially commenced today in Kokrajhar with the 133rd Durand Cup Football 2024 Group E tournament starting at the SAI Stadium. The day was marked by vibrant cultural and exhibition programs preceding the opening ceremony, featuring paragliding and a helicopter parade.

The inaugural festivities began at 2:00 pm, with the football season kickoff scheduled at 4:00 pm The first match saw Bodoland FC facing off against NorthEast United, culminating in a 2-0 defeat for the home side.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by high-ranking officials from the country's army, including BTR Chief Pramod Boro. Distinguished guests such as Mizoram Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar and former Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dr. Dasho Lotay Tshiring, also attended as chief guests.

The event created a festive atmosphere in Kokrajhar, with galleries filled with enthusiastic viewers. It is noteworthy that a total of six league matches of the Durand Cup will be held in Kokrajhar from July 30 to August 16, with a quarter-final match scheduled for August 21.
