With the race for three Rajya Sabha seats in Assam gathering momentum, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has sought the Congress party’s support.
Speaking to the media on the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, AIUDF leader Rafiqul Islam said the party has formally written to the Indian National Congress, reminding it of past political cooperation and urging it to reciprocate.
“We had written to Congress stating that we always supported Congress during President and Rajya Sabha elections. While taking our support, they always said that they would return the favour by supporting us. This is a good chance to do so,” Islam said.
The AIUDF has proposed the name of its president, Badruddin Ajmal, as a candidate for the Upper House, arguing that his presence in Parliament would benefit Assam and the broader North-East region. “If our party president goes to the Rajya Sabha, it will be beneficial for Assam and the North-East,” Islam asserted.
“We have sought Congress’s support. But we have not received any response yet. We request Congress to make a decision soon,” he added.
The appeal comes at a politically sensitive time, with equations shifting ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls. The elections for the three seats are being closely watched, as they could redefine opposition alignments in the state.
