Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi launched an attack on both the Congress and the BJP during a major rally in Barbala, under the Pakabetbari constituency in Barpeta. The event saw the turnout of over a thousand supporters, primarily from the minority community, as Gogoi made bold claims about political collusion and shifting loyalties ahead of future state elections.
In his address to the media, Gogoi alleged that Congress has effectively become an ally of the ruling BJP, singling out Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia. “Twenty-six Congress MLAs were reduced to 19 as seven joined the BJP, and Saikia did nothing,” he said. He further predicted, “In January, Debabrata Saikia will join the BJP.”
Gogoi accused the Congress of deliberately weakening the opposition by fielding candidates in five key constituencies, thereby splitting the anti-BJP vote. He claimed this strategy is helping the BJP retain power, even as Congress publicly positions itself as the main opposition in Assam.
He also criticised Congress state president Bhupen Borah, alleging that the party now views Raijor Dal—not BJP—as its chief competitor. “Only Raijor Dal can truly safeguard the minorities,” Gogoi said, asserting that minority voters in Lower Assam are increasingly turning toward his party after losing faith in Congress’s ability to counter the BJP.
Declaring momentum in Raijor Dal’s favour, Gogoi said, “There is a wave forming in Lower Assam. We will form the government in 2026.” He added that Congress has become irrelevant in Upper Assam, saying, “Congress leaders still think of themselves as landlords and the people as their tenants. But times have changed — people no longer listen to landlords.”
On a separate note, Gogoi addressed recent allegations involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. Responding to reports that Gaurav Gogoi had visited Pakistan, he said, “Any ordinary citizen can go to Pakistan. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi went and ate biryani there. Himanta Biswa Sarma can go — then why not someone else?” However, he warned against secrecy, stating, “If Gaurav Gogoi travelled to Pakistan by hiding his visa and passport details, he should be arrested.”
Drawing a comparison to illegal immigration, Gogoi added, “If Gaurav Gogoi secretly entered Pakistan, he should prove it — otherwise, he’s the world’s second most deceptive man.”
He also suggested that Bhupen Borah might be using AIUDF’s name to split votes in favour of the BJP, further implying a possible alignment between Borah and the ruling party. “There’s growing suspicion that even Bhupen Borah may end up joining the BJP,” Gogoi said.
