Tension gripped Assam's Badarpur in Sribhumi district on the day of Eid after reports emerged of alleged cow slaughter near a Hindu temple, located in a Hindu-majority locality.
The incident, which took place in the adjoining localities of Deorail and South Bhanga Mashli, led to a volatile situation requiring immediate police intervention.
Local sources from the Bhanga region allege that the cow was slaughtered as part of Eid al-Adha rituals, sparking strong objections from nearby residents.
The situation escalated rapidly into a heated confrontation between members of two communities. Eyewitnesses say the dispute intensified before law enforcement was notified.
Police teams rushed to the location and successfully brought the situation under control. No reports of physical violence or injuries were filed, but the atmosphere remained tense throughout the day.
Authorities have since arrested five individuals in connection with the incident. Those detained have been identified as Zihab Uddin, Giyas Uddin, Nazrul Islam, Fakhrul Islam, and Hussein Ahmed Barbhuiya. Police have not yet confirmed the specific charges but stated that a probe is underway to assess whether the incident violated local animal protection laws or caused deliberate provocation.
Senior police officials urged residents to maintain calm and refrain from spreading rumors that could inflame tensions further.
The local administration has deployed additional security in the affected areas to ensure peace and prevent further escalation.
