A delegation from the Assam Legislative Assembly took swift action yesterday, sealing depots in the Tipong area following an on-site inspection revealing illegal coal operations within the North East Coalfield of Margherita. The legislative move aims to curb unauthorized coal deposits spotted across Ledu Tipong.
Led by prominent MLAs including Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Pradeep Hazarika, and others, the team was taken aback by the massive reserves of coal and unlawful mining activities observed at Tikkok West Mining, Tirap Colliery, and the Tipong Firing Range. The presence of thousands of tonnes of coal reserves during their inspection prompted immediate action.
The legislative delegation convened a critical meeting with top officials from Coal India at the Lidu Club. Lasting over two hours, the meeting resulted in directives to the administration for prompt actions. Specifically, the administration was tasked to compile a comprehensive report on the illegal coal activities and to dismantle the hoarded coal reserves.
Today, as a direct consequence of these efforts, authorities successfully seized approximately 2000 tonnes of coal stored across two depots in the Tipong area. This operation marks a significant step towards curbing illicit coal activities and upholding regulatory standards in the region.
