Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Sunday, July 6 unveiled the tallest statue in Assam of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Kokrajhar. The grand unveiling coincided with the celebration of the 125th birth anniversary of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder and freedom fighter.
Erected at a prominent site in Kokrajhar city, the towering statue was funded through a ₹10 lakh grant from the Assam government, supplemented by donations from local leaders and community organizations. The monument is not only a visual landmark but also a symbolic reminder of Mukherjee’s enduring contributions to India’s democratic fabric.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Bijni MLA Ajay Roy, former Bilasipara MLA Ashok Singhi, Kokrajhar Municipal Board Chairperson Pratibha Brahma, and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park Committee President Santosh Tarafdar. The event drew local residents and party workers, turning the occasion into a significant moment for civic pride and public remembrance.
Tribute to a Nationalist Visionary
In his address, Speaker Daimary spoke passionately about Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s legacy, describing him as a visionary leader who upheld the principles of national unity, democratic strength, and cultural pride. He noted that Mukherjee’s ideals remain deeply relevant in modern India and called for continued efforts to inspire youth through such monumental tributes.
“This statue is not just a structure of stone and steel — it’s a symbol of ideals that continue to shape India’s path. Let it serve as an enduring reminder of our cultural consciousness and unity,” Daimary said.
Civic Leaders Hail Joint Effort
MLA Ajay Roy and former MLA Ashok Singhi applauded the state government’s support and praised the collective efforts of local BJP leaders, community groups, and municipal bodies in realizing the project. Pratibha Brahma, speaking as the civic representative of Kokrajhar, expressed her pride in hosting the statue, calling it a new identity marker for the city.
“This installation elevates Kokrajhar’s public landscape. It’s not just a tribute but also a cultural investment in our civic identity,” Brahma remarked.
A Landmark in Assam’s Symbolic History
With its imposing scale and historical significance, the statue stands as a powerful expression of Assam’s commitment to preserving national memory. Beyond its aesthetic value, the structure is expected to become a local heritage site, drawing citizens and visitors alike.
The Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park, where the statue stands, is now set to evolve into a center of civic engagement and historical education, according to committee members.
