A suspected beef smuggler was arrested Friday morning in Assam’s Dhubri district after police intercepted a scooty carrying 30 kilograms of raw beef, in a targeted operation aimed at curbing illegal meat transportation.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Balajan Police Station, under the jurisdiction of Gauripur Police, carried out a raid near the under-construction National Highway 127B. Officers became suspicious of a two-wheeler bearing West Bengal registration WB-63D-0084 heading toward Gauripur. When signalled to stop, the rider attempted to flee, but was caught following a brief pursuit.
The detained individual, identified as Nazmal Miah, son of Syed Ali Miah and a resident of Toofanganj in West Bengal, was found in possession of 30 kg of raw beef. The meat was seized immediately, and Miah was taken into custody.
Police say the incident reflects a growing trend of smuggling operations across the Assam-West Bengal border, where beef is often brought into the state in violation of local regulations. Authorities believe smugglers use back routes and vehicles with non-Assamese registration plates to avoid detection.
Uttam Roy, Officer-in-Charge of Balajan Police Station, confirmed that an investigation is underway to trace others involved in the supply chain and transportation network.
