The 28th death anniversary of Bir Chilagang Basumatary, the founding president of the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT), was solemnly observed at Bongsigaon in Kokrajhar on Saturday, June 28. The commemoration brought together prominent political leaders, intellectuals, and former BLT cadres in a rare show of unity.
The event was attended by Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Pramod Boro, former BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary, former BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary, Rajya Sabha MP Jayanta Basumatary, East Kokrajhar MLA Lawrence Islary, and ABSU Vice President Kwrwmdao Wary, along with several ex-BLT cadres and community leaders.
In a symbolic moment transcending political boundaries, leaders from the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) — including Hagrama Mohilary, Jayanta Basumatary, and Lawrence Islary — shared the same stage, emphasizing the need for unity in honoring the sacrifices of those who laid the foundation of the Bodoland movement.
Speaking as the chief guest, Hagrama Mohilary paid heartfelt tribute to Bir Chilagang Basumatary, stating,
"It would have been good if we could all be together. No matter where we are or which political ideologies we follow, we must unite when it matters. Chilagang Basumatary was not just a BLT leader; he was also an important leader of the ABSU. We must uphold the ideals and sacrifices of our martyrs like Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, Bineshwar Brahma, and Garla Batha."
He further called for renewed cooperation across political lines to work toward a common goal for the upliftment of the Boro community.
BTR Chief Pramod Boro also echoed the sentiment, emphasizing,
"While our political ideologies may differ, the unity of the Boro community remains intact. Political diversity should not deter us from standing together on issues of cultural and historical significance."
The event was marked by floral tributes, cultural performances, and emotional reflections on the legacy of the late leader, who played a pivotal role in shaping the early phase of the Bodoland movement.
