Bongaigaon Police in Assam have formed a 15-member Anti-Romeo Squad to strengthen the safety of women and young girls during the Durga Puja festivities and prevent incidents of harassment across the town.
The initiative has been launched under the leadership of Bongaigaon Senior Superintendent of Police Nomal Mahatta. The squad comprises male and female police personnel and is headed by a woman sub-inspector.
All 15 members have undergone specialised martial arts training over the past month as part of preparations for their deployment during the festival.
The team will patrol Durga Puja pandals and other locations across Bongaigaon town on two-wheelers, monitor security arrangements and respond to instances of harassment or inappropriate behaviour towards women and young girls.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring a safer environment for women and young girls visiting pandals and participating in Durga Puja celebrations.
Through the deployment of the special squad, Bongaigaon Police seek to strengthen on-ground security and help prevent harassment during the festive period.
