Massive erosion by the Burhi Dihing River has triggered alarm in Assam's Tinsukia district, with residents of Aghonibari, Secha Nepali and No. 3 Shalguri villages fearing that a key embankment connecting Aghonibari and Khowang could soon be breached.
The river has already washed away hundreds of bighas of fertile agricultural land, dealing a severe blow to the livelihoods of farmers in the erosion-hit areas. According to local residents, the erosion front is now just 100 to 200 metres away from the main embankment, raising fears that it could collapse if immediate protective measures are not taken.
The embankment is a crucial link between Aghonibari and Khowang, and residents say its breach would leave a vast area vulnerable to flooding and further erosion. With the river advancing rapidly, people living along its banks say they are spending sleepless nights fearing the worst.
Locals alleged that they have repeatedly alerted the Water Resources Department about the worsening situation, but no effective anti-erosion measures have been undertaken so far. They expressed disappointment over the authorities' alleged inaction despite the growing threat.
Residents have urged the Assam government and the Water Resources Department to immediately implement permanent erosion-control measures, warning that any further delay could lead to the irreversible loss of more agricultural land and endanger nearby villages and critical infrastructure.
