The resignation of former Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev from the Trinamool Congress appears to have triggered fresh uncertainty within the party's Assam unit, with Cachar district TMC president Rajesh Deb indicating that more leaders may soon quit the party.
Speaking to India Today, Deb claimed that Sushmita Dev had contacted him on June 9 and informed him about her decision to resign from the party.
"Yesterday, Sushmita contacted me and informed me about her resignation from the party. If there is chaos in the party's main office itself, how can the party function in its other branches? She has already met the Chief Minister of Assam and will now join the BJP. We too will resign from the TMC at all levels in the block within the next one or two days," Deb said.
His remarks come a day after Dev confirmed that she had left the All India Trinamool Congress, stating that the reasons behind her decision were "a long story."

The former Silchar MP, who joined the TMC in 2021 after leaving the Congress, resigned from the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and later acknowledged her departure from the party. Her subsequent meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi has fuelled speculation that she may soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Deb's comments suggest that Dev's exit could have a ripple effect on the party's organisational structure in Assam, particularly in the Barak Valley region where she remains one of the most influential political figures.
The Trinamool Congress has not yet officially responded to Deb's statement or the possibility of further resignations from its Assam unit.
The developments come amid growing turbulence within the TMC, which has witnessed multiple high-profile exits in recent days, raising questions about the party's organisational stability both within and outside West Bengal.
