Rising floodwaters of the Nangalbhanga River in Assam's Chirang district have washed away the only bamboo bridge connecting several villages, disrupting transportation and causing hardships for local residents.
The bamboo bridge served as a crucial link for people from multiple villages who used the route for daily commuting and access to essential services. Following the collapse of the bridge, residents have been left with no option but to rely on country boats for crossing the river.
Locals said the loss of the bridge has significantly affected movement in the area and raised safety concerns, particularly with the monsoon season underway.
Residents also alleged that promises had been made over the years to construct a permanent bridge over the river. They claimed that despite assurances from political leaders, including former Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary and current Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, no permanent bridge has been built.
The absence of a permanent structure has forced villagers to depend on temporary arrangements, exposing them to difficulties and risks during the rainy season. Residents have renewed their demand for the construction of a permanent bridge to ensure safe and uninterrupted connectivity.
