Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 17, clarified that the cancellation of the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE), 2024 results by the Assam Public Service Commission was due to a reservation-related discrepancy and not corruption or any other reason.
The APSC on February 16 cancelled the CCE 2024 result within hours of its declaration, citing an “inadvertent error” in the notified list.
Addressing the media, Sarma said the issue arose over the allocation of reserved seats for the Moran and Motok communities.
According to him, the state government had communicated that two seats each should be allotted to the Moran and Motok communities. However, four candidates from the Motok community were declared selected in the announced results.
“Upon discovering the error, the Commission immediately cancelled the result,” the Chief Minister said.
Sarma said both communities raised concerns over the discrepancy. While members of the Motok community reportedly sought cancellation after four candidates were selected, representatives of the Moran community maintained that their rightful share was two seats.
“There is no corruption or wrongdoing. It was a mistake that needs correction. After some time, the results will be announced again,” he said, adding that the government must listen to smaller communities and ensure fairness in implementing reservation policies.
He described the Moran community as one of the older tribes in Assam and said the government remains committed to protecting their interests.
Sarma also stated that while he was in Varanasi, members of the Motok community contacted him regarding the issue. He criticised attempts to sensationalise the matter.
Taking a swipe at media baron Jayanta Baruah, the Chief Minister suggested that those aligned with the Indian National Congress should work in the interest of their party rather than take positions that may alienate communities. He further claimed that such actions could impact the Congress party’s support among Moran voters.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the corrected results would be reissued after necessary revisions and urged the public not to view the matter through a political lens.
