Assam CM warns traders against exploiting farmers, enforces Rs 2,670 paddy procurement price

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 14 issued a stern warning against the exploitation of farmers during the ongoing paddy procurement season, asserting that the state government will take strict legal action against anyone purchasing paddy below the minimum support price fixed by the government.

Addressing the media in Diphu, the Chief Minister said the government has fixed the procurement price of paddy at ₹2,670 per quintal and made it clear that this rate is non-negotiable. He cautioned private traders and other purchasers against paying farmers less than the notified price, stating that such practices would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Dr. Sarma said the government is closely monitoring procurement activities to ensure that farmers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce.

The Chief Minister strongly criticised the role of middlemen and unscrupulous traders, alleging that they often take advantage of farmers’ lack of market access and immediate financial needs to force distress sales. He said the state is committed to protecting farmers from such exploitative practices and ensuring that the benefits of government policies reach them directly.

Reiterating the government’s pro-farmer stance, Dr. Sarma said safeguarding the interests of cultivators remains a priority for the Assam government. He added that enforcement mechanisms have been put in place and any violation of the procurement norms would invite punitive action as per law.

In a significant announcement aimed at strengthening local procurement infrastructure, the Chief Minister said the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is considering setting up rice mills in each Legislative Autonomous Council (LAC) under its jurisdiction. He said such an initiative would help reduce farmers’ dependence on private traders, improve local value addition and ensure smoother procurement at fair prices.

Dr. Sarma said the proposed move would not only empower farmers economically but also contribute to long-term agricultural sustainability in the hill districts by creating local processing capacity and employment opportunities.
