The Tai-Ahom Yuva Parishad, Asom (TAYPA) has lodged a formal complaint against the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha at Margherita Police Station, escalating tensions between the two groups. The move follows multiple complaints allegedly filed by members of the Sangha against TAYPA members across Assam.
The complaint was submitted by TAYPA’s Margherita sub-divisional committee, led by Durga Konwar, vice president of the organisation’s central executive committee. According to Konwar, members of the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha had insulted the Tai Ahom community and disrespected their traditional festival, Me-Dam-Me-Phi.
Konwar emphasised the historical significance of the Tai Ahom community, stating that Chaolung Sukapha’s 600-year-old Ahom kingdom was built on principles of equality, respect, and brotherhood. He accused certain groups and individuals of attempting to suppress the community’s rights, customs, and traditions.
TAYPA has urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also serves as Assam’s Home Minister, to take strict action against the leaders of the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha for allegedly targeting the Tai Ahom community and its festivals.
The controversy intensified after Chandra Baruah, a Tai Ahom resident of Gohpur and a member of the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, participated in the Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival. Following this, the Sangha reportedly took disciplinary action against Baruah, imposing a fine of Rs 500.
Konwar further alleged that top leaders of the Sangha, including Chief Padhadhikar Bhabendranath Deka, Chief Secretary Kushal Thakuria, and Seva Vahini Chief Sanjib Borah, along with several Facebook users, had made derogatory remarks against Me-Dam-Me-Phi and the Tai Ahom community on social media.
TAYPA now demands legal action against those responsible and expects authorities to intervene swiftly.
