Congress leaders in Assam stepped up their criticism of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the state government, urging party workers to strengthen grassroots mobilisation across the region.
Addressing workers at the District Congress Party Office in Diphu on October 24, AICC Spokesperson and Assam Media Coordinator Onika Mehrotra outlined strategies to consolidate the party’s presence in Karbi Anglong. The session, organised by the Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KA-DCC), was attended by KA-DCC President Raton Engti, Media Chairperson Charisma Rongpipi, and other office bearers.
Speaking at a press conference later, Mehrotra launched a sharp attack on KAAC Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, alleging widespread corruption. She accused Ronghang of prioritising personal wealth over the welfare of local residents and described him as an “ATM” for Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whom she labelled “India’s most corrupt Chief Minister.”
Mehrotra claimed Ronghang was responsible for transferring 1.53 lakh bighas of land to BJP-affiliated business associates, undermining the interests of Karbi Anglong’s population. She also criticised the BJP for politicising the investigation into the murder of singer Zubeen Garg, alleging the party was exploiting the tragedy for political advantage.
Calling for unity among Congress workers, Mehrotra vowed to intensify efforts to expose alleged misdeeds by the BJP-led administration and defend the rights of Assam’s people.
