Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika has claimed that the Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election due to differences among its senior leaders over who should contest the seat.
Addressing a BJP joining programme at Gunabari under the Garajan BJP Mandal of Samaguri, Hazarika alleged that two Congress leaders had separately given assurances regarding contesting from Nagaon, resulting in uncertainty over the party’s candidate selection.
Taking a dig at the Congress, Hazarika also referred to alleged discussions at Hotel Lily and Green Resort, urging the opposition party to “think carefully” before making further moves.
On the electoral contest, Hazarika claimed that the BJP would emerge victorious with its candidate Devasish Sharma, saying Sharma was given the ticket because he enjoys public support. He further claimed that minority voters would also support the BJP in the by-election.
Hazarika also targeted senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain, saying his criticism of Devasish Sharma reflected what he described as the Congress leader’s fear of defeat.
The remarks came during a major BJP joining programme in Samaguri, where veteran Congress workers Abdul Malek Master and Osman Ali, along with their supporters, joined the BJP.
The claims made by Hazarika are political statements and have not been independently verified.
