Security forces patrolled the streets near Shyamkanu Mahanta’s residence in Geetanagar on September 25 as authorities intensified efforts to locate the organiser of the Northeast India Festival. Mahanta is under investigation following the death of singer Zubeen Garg during a yacht trip in Singapore.
The Assam government has banned Mahanta and his associated organisations from hosting any events in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government will also withhold financial grants, advertisements, and sponsorships from any events linked to him, directly or indirectly.
Authorities are working to arrest Mahanta as part of the ongoing investigation, which has already triggered multiple FIRs across Assam.
The Assam Association Singapore said it cannot comment publicly on Garg’s death as some members are cooperating with the investigation. Garg, a 52-year-old singer widely celebrated in Assam and across India, died on September 19 during a cultural festival trip marking Northeast India traditions and the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations.
The three-day festival, scheduled for September 19-21, was cancelled immediately by the Indian High Commission in Singapore following Garg’s death. The singer’s passing has deeply affected the Assamese diaspora and fans across the region.
"The untimely passing of our beloved Zubeen Da has left the entire Assamese community in Singapore in deep sorrow. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and our community in Assam and beyond," the association said.
The investigation into the circumstances of Garg’s death on the recreational boat trip is ongoing, with authorities yet to release further details.
