A long-pending demand to widen the highway through Kaliabor moved a step forward after Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari assured an Assam delegation that the proposal would be examined.
The delegation, led by Assam minister and local MLA Keshab Mahanta, met Gadkari at Parliament House and submitted a memorandum seeking expansion and four-laning of the National Highway stretch from Kaliabor Tiniali to Rangolu.
The road, earlier known as NH-37 and now designated NH-715, is a key arterial route in central Assam.
The issue of four-laning has been unresolved for nearly three years, affecting connectivity and traffic flow in the region. During the meeting, Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya outlined the current status of the project and highlighted concerns related to delays and infrastructure bottlenecks in Kaliabor.
Assam MPs Birendra Prasad Baishya, Phani Bhusan Choudhury and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were present at the discussion. Other members of the delegation included Pradip Laskar, Golap Chandra Saikia, Plawan Bora, Mriganka Bora, Lekhnath Sharma and Subham Damai.
Gadkari told the delegation that the demand would be duly considered, offering fresh hope to residents and commuters who have been seeking an upgrade of the busy highway corridor.
