Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has voiced his concerns over the ongoing delimitation process in Assam stating the need for the Election Commission (EC) to address the matter independently. Saikia expressed apprehensions about the influence of the government on the EC and cited specific instances of discrepancies in constituency boundaries.
Saikia pointed to his own constituency, Nazira, where a panchayat has been merged with the Sivasagar constituency, a move he claims is against the established laws governing delimitation. He also highlighted similar irregularities occurring in various regions throughout Assam.
One of the key issues arising from the delimitation process is the fate of the Amguri constituency in Sivasagar district. Each Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is entitled to specific rights, including a fund of Rs 1 crore allocated for the development of their constituency. However, with the Amguri constituency no longer in existence, questions have emerged regarding the allocation of these funds. MLAs now face the dilemma of whether to invest in the Dimow constituency, Sivasagar constituency or Nazira constituency
Furthermore, the delimitation process has led to situations where two MLAs share the same constituency, creating uncertainty about how they will allocate the MLA Area Development Fund.
Seeking a resolution to these issues, Saikia urged the Chief Minister to address the matter. He emphasized that these concerns have been raised and that they intend to seek legal remedies by approaching higher courts. Saikia stressed that the delimitation process should have been properly notified in advance, allowing MLAs to work in their respective constituencies and find practical solutions.
