Assam: Dibrugarh administration evicts 60 families from Brahmaputra riverbank land

The Dibrugarh district administration on Monday, June 15, carried out an eviction drive at Paltan Bazar, behind the Chief Minister's Secretariat, clearing alleged encroachments from nearly nine bighas of land along the Brahmaputra riverbank.
 

Officials said around 60 families had been residing on the land after constructing houses there over several years. Notices had been served on the occupants in recent weeks asking them to vacate the area ahead of the operation.
 

The eviction was conducted by officials of the district administration with the support of police personnel. Security arrangements were put in place to ensure the exercise was carried out without any disruption.
 

According to officials, the drive was undertaken to reclaim government land allegedly occupied without authorisation. The administration used earthmovers and other machinery to remove structures from the site.
 

The area forms part of the riverbank zone near the Maijan area, where authorities have previously expressed concerns over encroachment on public land.
 

Officials said similar drives could be undertaken in other parts of Dibrugarh where government land has allegedly been encroached upon. No untoward incident was reported during the operation.
