Assam: Dima Hasao to begin first phase of Census 2027 after August 16; self-enumeration from August 2

The first phase of Census 2027, comprising House Listing and Housing Census, will begin in Assam's Dima Hasao district after August 16, while citizens will be able to submit their household details online through the newly introduced self-enumeration facility from August 2, Deputy Commissioner Gayatri Devidas Hailing announced on Friday, July 31.
Addressing a press conference at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Haflong, Hailing said the first phase would involve collecting information on every household, including housing conditions, available amenities and other basic details.
She said the second phase, involving Population Enumeration, will be conducted in February 2027. During this stage, demographic, social, educational and economic information of every individual will be collected to support future policy formulation and development planning.
The 2027 Census will be the 16th Census of India and the eighth since Independence. It will also be the country's first large-scale digital census, with advanced technology being used for data collection and management to improve transparency, efficiency and accuracy.
As part of the new digital initiative, citizens can complete the self-enumeration process online between August 2 and August 16, 2026, allowing them to submit details of their households through a dedicated digital platform before the field survey begins.
The district administration has appealed to residents to extend full cooperation during the Census exercise and ensure that the information provided is accurate and complete to facilitate reliable and realistic data collection.
Officials said Census data plays a crucial role in government planning and policymaking, serving as the basis for resource allocation and the formulation of schemes in sectors such as education, healthcare, housing, transportation and infrastructure, while also providing an updated picture of the country's demographic profile.
