Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday, March 31 said that the narrative around the Northeast has shifted from “backwardness” to “development and progress,” attributing the change to sustained policy focus and outreach by the Centre.
Addressing a public meeting in the Tezpur Assembly constituency, Rajnath Singh said the region is now being discussed for its growth trajectory, which he described as a matter of national pride. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the Northeast around 30 times over the past 12 years, contrasting it with what he termed as infrequent visits by prime ministers during the Congress-led governments.
Rajnath Singh said Assam is witnessing accelerated development and is emerging as a key driver of growth in the Northeast. “Assam is moving forward with new confidence. It has become an engine of growth for the region,” he said.
Linking the State’s progress with national aspirations, the Defence Minister asserted that India’s overall development is closely tied to Assam’s growth. “Only when Assam develops will India become developed,” he added.
The remarks come amid intensified political campaigning in Assam, with parties highlighting governance records and development narratives ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
