The historic Ranghar in Sivasagar came alive today with vibrant festivities as the Rangpur Fair was held under the initiative of The Ahom Youth Council. Celebrated on the auspicious occasion of Pahela Magh, the fair created an atmosphere of joy and cultural unity, drawing crowds from across the region.
The event commenced with the ceremonial hoisting of the flag and the traditional Maidam Tarpan ritual in the morning, formally inaugurating the fair. For the past 15 years, the Rangpur Mela has been a significant cultural event aimed at preserving and strengthening the bonds of heritage, harmony, and unity in the historic Rangpur region.
A highlight of the fair was the colorful performances by various ethnic cultural troupes, including the Ahoms, Tiwas, Misings, Bodos, and others. These performances showcased the rich tapestry of Assam's indigenous traditions through music, dance, and vibrant costumes, captivating the audience.
In keeping with traditional celebrations, several indigenous sports activities were organized, such as loose pole climbing, kadi khela, and the popular tekeli bhanga (pot-breaking) contest. These games not only entertained the large crowd but also connected the younger generation with age-old customs.
However, it is noteworthy that despite a court-imposed ban, local buffalo fights took place at Ruphi ground near the historic Rangghar Bakri. This controversial yet traditional event attracted significant attention and added to the lively atmosphere of the fair.
