Assam eyes major flood control project for Sivasagar's erosion-hit riverine areas

Assam Cultural Affairs Minister and Guardian Minister of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, Bimal Bora, on June 29 visited several flood- and erosion-affected areas in Sivasagar district to assess the damage and review relief and protection measures.

The minister inspected Disangmukh and Saraguri Chapori, the site of the revered Ajan Pir Dargah, all of which have been severely affected by recurring floods and riverbank erosion over the years.

Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bora reviewed the situation on the ground and instructed officials of the concerned departments to take all necessary measures to address the challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon and protect vulnerable areas.

During the visit, the minister announced that the state government would soon undertake a major flood protection project for the affected region. He said the initiative aims to safeguard the flood-prone areas, which are known for their significant paddy cultivation and contribute substantially to agricultural production.

Bora also directed officials to ensure adequate preparedness during the flood season and to take all necessary steps for relief, mitigation and protection of affected residents.

Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav, Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department and other district administration officials accompanied the minister during the inspection.
