A fake homeopathic doctor has been arrested at the Burapahar Tea Estate in Assam's Kaliabor. The arrest took place during a raid led by Dr Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration.
The accused, Sabita Das, a resident of Tezpur, had been working at the Burapahar Tea Estate for the past three years.
She claimed to have a diploma from the National Education Board of Alternative Medicine & Compound Homoeopathy, Assam, and a registration certificate from the Council of Alternative Systems of Medicines, West Bengal. However, these institutions are not recognised by the Board of Homoeopathic System of Medicines, Assam.
On May 8, 2025, Dr Dipen Baruah, Registrar of the Board of Homoeopathic System of Medicines, Assam, sent a letter to Dr Abhijit Neog clarifying the non-recognition of these institutions.
Following this, Sabita Das was arrested on Sunday under case number 51/2025.
Earlier, on March 25 2025, Dr. Apurba Kumar Sharma, Garden Health Inspector of Tezpur under the Labour Commissioner's Office, Government of Assam, identified two fake doctors.
In a letter dated 4th April 2025 to Dr. Abhijit Neog, he reported that Sabita Das had been working at Burapahar Tea Estate, and another individual, Sadhan Sarkar, had been working at Panbari Tea Estate in Sonitpur district and serving as a visiting doctor in other tea estates.
Following the identification, a raid was conducted by Jakhalabandha Police under the leadership of Dr. Abhijit Neog, resulting in the arrest of Sabita Das.
After the arrest, she was taken to Nagaon Sadar Police Station for further investigation after a medical examination.
