A farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam's Rangapara under Sonitpur district on Monday, May 12 morning.
The deceased has been identified as Krishna Kheria, a resident of Poglabill village. According to eyewitness accounts, Kheria was ploughing his farmland when a wild elephant emerged from the Poglabill-Barjuli connecting road and charged into the field without warning. The elephant attacked Kheria brutally, leaving him dead on the spot.
Local villagers reported that another woman, who was nearby during the incident, narrowly escaped with her life. The sudden and aggressive appearance of the elephant has once again highlighted the escalating human-elephant conflict in the region—raising alarm among the farming community who fear for their safety.
Upon receiving information, a team from Rangapara Police Station reached the site and conducted a preliminary investigation. Meanwhile, residents of Poglabill have urged forest officials to take immediate steps to drive the elephant back into the forest area, emphasizing the need for stronger preventive measures.
