A major fire broke out late night of June 7 at Sivasthan Market in Assam's Samaguri area, reducing five commercial establishments to ashes and causing extensive property damage.
According to local residents, the blaze erupted shortly after tremors from an earthquake were felt in the region. Locals suspect that an electrical short circuit triggered by the tremors may have caused the fire, though the exact cause is yet to be officially confirmed.
The fire spread rapidly, engulfing five shops within minutes. Goods and merchandise worth an estimated Rs 50–60 lakh were destroyed in the incident.
The midnight blaze created panic among shop owners and residents, who rushed to the scene in an attempt to control the flames. However, the intensity of the fire left little chance of saving the shops or their contents.
Several shop owners were seen in distress as years of investment and stock were reduced to ashes within a short span of time.
Local residents have alleged that despite being informed immediately, firefighters from the Sonaibali Fire and Emergency Services station, located not far from the market, arrived at the scene after a significant delay.
No casualties have been reported so far. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
