Assam floods: Disang embankment breach inundates 70–80 villages in Mahmora, residents take shelter on roads

A breach in the Disang river embankment has triggered severe flooding in Assam's Mahmora Assembly constituency in Charaideo district, submerging around 70 to 80 villages and forcing hundreds of families to leave their homes with their livestock.
 

The embankment reportedly breached during the night, allowing floodwaters to inundate villages that had never witnessed flooding before. Residents said water levels reached up to chest height in the courtyards of several homes, leaving people stranded and causing widespread damage.
 

Among the worst-affected villages are Jajoli, Doba, Moranjan, Laiseng, Borchahaki, Dhemajibil, Kasupathar, Lechaihabi, Bishrampur, Paramani, Khokamara, Jajoli Pukhuri, Maudumoni, Hatiborua, and 1 No. and 2 No. Halouguri.
 

With floodwaters entering their homes, many families have been forced to take shelter along roadsides, bringing their cattle, goats and other livestock with them as safer ground remains scarce.
 

The district administration has established temporary relief camps for displaced residents and is providing medical assistance in the affected areas. However, the flood situation remains critical, with large parts of the constituency still submerged and no significant improvement reported.
 

The flooding in Mahmora is part of the wider flood crisis affecting eastern Assam, where relentless rainfall and overflowing rivers have inundated several districts, disrupting normal life and displacing thousands of people.
 

Residents have appealed for more relief materials, drinking water and essential supplies as they continue to grapple with the unprecedented flood situation.
