Assam floods: 'Twenty years of hard work was washed away,' says Charaideo flood survivor

As floodwaters continue to recede in Assam's Charaideo district, the enormity of the destruction is becoming increasingly evident. While the immediate flood situation has improved, thousands of families in Tengapukhuri and nearby villages are still struggling to recover after homes, shops and livelihoods were washed away by one of the worst floods the region has witnessed in recent years.
 

Among them is a flood survivor from Tengapukhuri, whose small shop, his family's primary source of income, was destroyed in the deluge.
 

"We have never seen anything like this. Everything has been damaged; nothing is left," he said.
 

"Floods have occurred here before, but never on this scale. Earlier, the water would come one day and recede the next. This time, it remained for four days."
 

The prolonged inundation left his shop in ruins, wiping out years of hard-earned savings.
 

"My shop has also been damaged. Whatever we earned is finished. My twenty years of income was washed away. Not only me, but almost everyone here has suffered," he said.
 

Appealing for government support, the resident said assistance would be crucial for families trying to rebuild their lives.
 

"If we get any support from the government, it will be a great help," he said.
 

The devastation extends far beyond a single family. Across Tengapukhuri and surrounding villages, residents have returned to homes buried under thick layers of silt, damaged household belongings, ruined farmland and lost livestock. Many families continue to stay on roadsides and elevated areas as their houses remain unsafe to return to.
 

Although the floodwaters have largely receded, residents say the crisis is far from over. With businesses destroyed and livelihoods disrupted, many are now looking to the government for financial assistance and rehabilitation support to help them rebuild their homes and restart their lives after the disaster.
