Four police personnel have been arrested in Assam's Cachar district on June 26, for allegedly conducting an unauthorised anti-gambling operation that was followed by the death of a man who jumped into a river while attempting to flee.
The arrested personnel have been identified as Santosh Biswas, Kagai Rongmai, Sarbananda Doley and Suraj Borgoyary.
According to reports, the four policemen conducted an anti-gambling raid at Lakhipur on June 15 without informing or obtaining permission from their superior officers. During the operation, a man identified as Mohit Kanu allegedly jumped into the Chiri River while trying to escape from the police.
His body was recovered from the river the following day, triggering widespread protests in the area. Local residents and members of the deceased's family staged road blockades and laid siege to the local police outpost, demanding action against those responsible.
Following the incident, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Cachar, placed the four personnel under suspension and ordered a departmental inquiry.
The inquiry reportedly found that the officers had conducted the operation without authorisation and in violation of departmental procedures. Based on the findings, they were arrested on Thursday.
The four accused were later produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
