For years people residing near the banks of river Brahmaputra have faced major threat of erosion. As the monsoon season approaches, scores of family in Gohpur residing near the river bank abandon their homes as heavy rains and rising water level causes massive erosion and flooding.
Upset over the water resources department’s lackadaisical attitude towards the problems faced by the poor residents of Gohpur, the people have only shifted their bases over the years.
“Our situation is currently worrisome. Now we are preparing to leave this spot with not a single penny in our pockets. Now the monsoon season will arrive, accompanied with massive erosion and flooding that will wash away our homes. Hence, when few weeks are left ahead of the monsoon, we are planning to abandon our homes and shift to safer places”, said one affected person.
Over the years, the people have been in the grip of erosion. In the last four-five years, more than a hundred families have lost their homes and shifted elsewhere.
The problem of preventing erosion has not been solved till date. People are now worried as they await the approaching monsoon season accompanied by nature’s fury.
