The Bulbuli bird fight, a traditional event during Magh Bihu celebrations in Assam, has taken place in Hajo after a nine-year gap. This is part of the state government's efforts to preserve age-old customs and traditions associated with the harvest festival.
The decision to resume the fight was made during the weekly Assam cabinet meeting on December 21, ensuring that the revered Hayagriva Madhav Mandir in Hajo will once again host the Bulbuli fights.
It is important to note that these fights had not been organised in Assam for the past nine years due to a ban imposed by the Gauhati High Court in 2015.
However, on December 8, the Assam government decided to allow traditional buffalo fights during Magh Bihu, provided they are organized under specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
This decision follows a request from the Gauhati High Court in October asking the state government to clarify its position on the issue.
