Assam: Group of youths assault man with cricket stump; five held

A young man in Lakuwa was assaulted by a group of helmeted youths, one of whom struck him on the head from behind with a cricket stump, police said on August 11.

The victim, identified as Rituraj Gogoi, sustained head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dibrugarh.

Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the incident, which has sparked public outrage after a video of the attack circulated widely on social media.

According to investigators, the attack was premeditated and reportedly triggered by a minor dispute. Eyewitnesses allege that the assailants deliberately targeted the victim, echoing similarities to the earlier “Abhi-Neel” case.

The incident has drawn strong condemnation from residents, who have urged authorities to take strict action against the culprits to prevent similar acts of violence in the future.
