Several former women cricketers from Hajo have returned to competitive training after a gap of nearly three decades. The players, who were among the earliest women to represent Assam in cricket, have resumed practice at the newly constructed stadium in Hajo, signalling a powerful comeback for women’s sports in the region.
The resurgence comes at a time when women’s cricket is gaining unprecedented global attention. Encouraged by the sport’s rising stature, the former players have begun preparing for the upcoming state-level cricket tournament scheduled to be held in Odisha.
Women’s cricket in Hajo first took shape in 1997, when a group of young girls formed a team under the leadership of coach Madan Das. With a coaching centre established in the town, several players went on to represent Assam in sub-junior, senior and East Zone tournaments, earning recognition for their talent and commitment.
Today, players such as Parami Das, Pratibha Baishya, Anita Kumari, Atikur Nessa, Karimun Nessa, Khirada Kumari and Manju Kumari — all former members of the Guwahati main squad and the Assam state team — have returned to the nets with renewed dedication. Despite balancing family and professional responsibilities, the cricketers have carved out time to prepare, focusing on strengthening both their batting and bowling departments.
Sports enthusiasts hail this comeback as a significant milestone for women’s empowerment in Assam, especially at a time when the state is pushing to boost female participation in sports. The return of these seasoned players, some resuming their sporting journey after nearly 32 years, is being celebrated as a symbol of resilience, determination and inspiration for rural women across the state.
