Continuous heavy rainfall since midnight triggered a flood situation in Assam's Chirang district on Monday, July 13, inundating several villages in the Panbari area and affecting at least 15 families.
Bijoypur village was the worst hit, with floodwaters entering homes and leaving families marooned as water levels continued to rise through the day.
According to local residents, the water level began increasing rapidly in the morning following incessant rainfall and has continued to rise, damaging household belongings and disrupting normal life.
The affected families alleged that no government officials or disaster response teams had reached the area by the time of reporting despite the worsening flood situation. They appealed to the district administration to provide immediate rescue and relief assistance, including food, drinking water and other essential supplies.
The flooding was triggered by overnight rainfall, which caused water levels in low-lying areas to rise sharply. Several roads in the locality were also partially submerged, affecting movement and connectivity.
Chirang is among Assam's flood-prone districts, where heavy monsoon rains frequently lead to flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable villages. Residents have urged the authorities to take immediate measures to evacuate affected families and prevent further damage if the rain continues.
