A hospital built to serve the people of Tekeri village in Assam’s Tinsukia district remains non-operational even 12 years after its construction, leaving residents without access to essential healthcare.
Tekeri Model Hospital, located under the 83 No. Margherita Constituency, was completed in 2012 but has yet to be equipped with doctors, nurses, staff, and medical supplies. Despite repeated appeals by locals and student organizations, the hospital stands abandoned, earning the moniker “Bhoot Bangla” (haunted house).
The project was initiated in 2008 under the then-Congress government, with six bighas of land donated by a local philanthropist. Although construction was completed, successive governments have failed to operationalize the facility. The absence of medical services forces the 500-plus residents of Tekeri village to travel long distances for treatment.
Organisations like the All Moran Students’ Union and local residents have repeatedly urged the current BJP-led Assam government to make the hospital functional. However, after over a decade of inaction, the structure continues to deteriorate, symbolising the neglect of rural healthcare infrastructure in the region.
