The funeral rites of Venerable Indrabonsho Bhikkhu, the chief abbot of Inthem Mungong Buddha Vihar in Margherita, were performed today with full religious honours. The ceremony took place at the Inthem public crematorium, where the late monk was laid to rest according to traditional Buddhist rites.
A solemn procession was held from Inthem Mungong Buddha Vihar to the cremation ground, with the mortal remains transported in a flower-decorated vehicle. Hundreds of followers, including Buddhist monks and devotees from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, gathered to pay their final respects.
The Buddhist community remains in deep shock following the tragic incident. On the evening of 22 November, the blood-soaked body of Venerable Indrabonsho Bhikkhu was discovered inside his bedroom. Preliminary reports suggest he was brutally murdered by an unidentified assailant using a sharp axe.
After the completion of the post-mortem examination, the final rites were conducted today.
Meanwhile, the Margherita Police, district administration, and a team from the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory have launched a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrator(s).
Buddhist monks and followers have appealed to the Assam Government and the police to ensure the strictest possible punishment for those responsible.
The funeral ceremony witnessed the participation of admirers, local residents, senior monks, and lay devotees (upasakas and upasikas) who came together to honour the spiritual leader’s memory.
