Assam: Jorhat flood situation under control as water levels recede, says Union Minister Pabitra Margherita

The first phase of the flood situation in Assam’s Jorhat district is now under control, with water levels receding after floods affected around 1.66 lakh people across 304 villages, Union Minister Pabitra Margherita said.

According to Margherita, nine people have died in the floods in the district, while 39 relief camps were set up to accommodate affected residents. A total of 9,659 people are currently staying in these relief camps.

The floods have also caused significant losses to livestock. More than 17,000 animals were washed away, while around 1.18 lakh animals were affected by the flooding, the Union minister said.

Margherita said the Central and state governments were continuing relief and rehabilitation measures in the affected areas. He said medical assistance and public health support were also being extended to flood-affected people.

“With the constant support of the Central Government, the State Government is extending all possible support for rehabilitation, relief and medical assistance,” Margherita said.

He added that the state government was providing support in areas ranging from public health to medical care as the district moved towards recovery following the first phase of flooding.
