Residents of Mathoukhat, Bamuni and Bamuni Pathar areas of Kaliabor have opposed an alleged move to set up an industrial unit on agricultural land, saying the proposed project could affect farmland and nearby residential areas.
The residents alleged that some business groups were making efforts to establish the industrial unit in the Mathoukhat area, amid concerns over the impact on the region's agricultural land and settlements.
They also alleged that the local administration was supporting the business groups in their efforts to establish the proposed industry.
The residents said they had opposed the project and warned of an intensified agitation if their objections were ignored.
They said the proposed site should instead be used for setting up a school or a hospital, which they claimed would better serve the local population.
The residents maintained that protecting the area's agricultural land and residential settlements should be prioritised over setting up an industrial project.
