A large-scale public gathering was held in Gossaigaon today, March 23 under the leadership of the Kamatapur State Demand Council (KSDC) to advocate for tribal status for the Koch-Rajbongshi community, the re-establishment of Kamatapur state, and the constitutional recognition of the Koch-Rajbongshi language by including it in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The event witnessed the participation of thousands of Koch-Rajbongshi people from Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and other regions, all rallying in support of these long-standing demands.
During the gathering, KSDC leaders and activists voiced their discontent, pointing out that despite the Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO) chief Jiban Singha returning to the mainstream in response to the Indian government’s appeal, a formal peace accord is yet to be signed.
Expressing frustration over the lack of progress in negotiations, the leaders criticized both the central and state governments, emphasizing that despite seven rounds of discussions, no substantial resolution has been achieved. Prominent figures such as Jiban Singha and D.L. Koch reaffirmed their core demands, urging authorities to grant tribal status, recognize the Koch-Rajbongshi language, and establish a separate Kamatapur state through a structured peace agreement.
The KSDC has issued a three-month ultimatum, warning that if their demands are not met within this period, they will escalate their movement into a large-scale democratic agitation.
