Kokrajhar's West Tribal Community MLA, Rabiram Narzary, expressed deep concern over the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two individuals from his constituency, who were among the miners trapped in the Umrangso coal mine in Dima Hasao district.
"It's a very unfortunate incident. Two individuals from my constituency, who had gone to work in Umrangso, Dima Hasao, where illegal mining was taking place, got trapped and lost their lives. It's very sad news and extremely unfortunate for us.” Narzary stated.
The tragic accident occurred when several miners were caught in the flooded rat-hole coal mine on January 6. As of now, four bodies have been recovered, but five miners are still missing. Rescue operations, led by the Indian Army, Navy, and NDRF, are ongoing, with water levels in the mine receding gradually.
Narzary has urged the Assam government to offer financial assistance to the bereaved families and provide government jobs to help support them in their time of need. The MLA highlighted the urgent need for compensation and stability for the families who have lost their breadwinners in this tragic accident.
Further updates are expected as the rescue operation progresses.
