The two-day-long Bohagi Festival, scheduled to begin at the Ledo Railway Rangamanch under the 83rd Margherita Constituency on May 9, today, has been cancelled in light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
The decision comes following an appeal from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to suspend all remaining Bihu celebrations across the state from May 10 onwards.
The Ledo Bohagi Festival Celebration Committee announced that instead of the planned cultural festivities, a condolence meeting will be held to pay tribute to the martyred Indian soldiers and innocent civilians who lost their lives amid ongoing hostilities.
In a message shared on social media earlier today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed for the cancellation of all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from May 10 onwards, effectively bringing the month-long celebrations to a close.
“Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their participation and contributions,” Sarma said.
His appeal to halt further celebrations follows a series of alarming developments at the India-Pakistan border, including explosions reported in parts of Jammu on the night of May 8. The war-like situation has sparked concern nationwide and prompted a wave of cautionary measures across various states.
